Math Placement Test

As there is not a common Mathematics curriculum among our students' grammar schools, the Math Department at St. Thomas Aquinas High School offers a placement test to all incoming freshmen in May.

The test assess a student's skill in Algebra and determines into which class the student will be placed. This test is optional, however, a student relying only on their score on the entrance exam can only be placed into:

  • Algebra 1
  • Algebra 1 Honors

Should the student take the test and perform well, they could be placed into:
  • Geometry
  • Geometry Honors
  • Algebra 2 / Geometry Honors

Foreign Language Placement Test

This test will help determine whether a student should repeat or continue in Level 1 of the language, advance to a more challenging honors class, or if the student's achievements have earned the student placement into Level 2, Level 2 Honors, or Spanish for Heritage Speakers. We offer placement tests in French, Italian, Latin, and Spanish for students currently taking those languages.

We also encourage all native speakers of Chinese, Italian or Spanish, and those who hear the language at home, to take the test even if they are not proficient in the written language.

Possible topics for the test are:

  • Greetings, classroom objects, months, days, seasons, time, weather, numbers, family members, city locations, clothing, food
  • Gender of nouns, plurals, adjective agreement, possessive adjectives
  • Present tense or regular and irregular verbs
  • Question formations and question words

This test is offered to incoming freshmen in May.
