Engineering Students Become Bridge Builders
Posted on 04/16/2018
The students in Mr. Mulvihill's Intro to Engineering Class recently received a challenge: build a bridge to traverse the creek behind Bishop Ahr High School using only cardboard and glue. After weeks of calculations and construction, on Friday, April 13 it came time to put the designs to the test: the bridges would have to support the weight of the teacher as he crossed from one side to the other. Bridges took the form of viaducts, single span beam bridges, and multiple span beam bridges. In the end, only one bridge passed the rigorous challenge. However, the failures provided a great teachable moment as Mr. Mulvihill and the students analyzed the precise cause and mode of failure for each case. Are these students ready to be bridge builders? Not yet, but they will be!
