12th Annual Hoops for Heart Gets Pulses Racing
Posted on 03/13/2020
Whether a player on the court or a spectator in the bleachers, the 12th Annual Hoops for Heart Basketball Game got hearts racing with intense student, alumni, and teacher basketball competition. This year marks 41 years that the American Heart Association is partnering with schools. In the twelve years that STA has put on this charity game, the school has raised over $45,000!

The game featured two STA faculty/alumni teams playing against each other. And both teams wanted the win! In addition to that, there were nine STA student teams playing with friendly but heated competition. Joining the faculty team were 10 STA alumni! It was an exciting game down to the last second, but the White Teams outscored the Red Teams. Brian Chang and his team starring Frank Colavope, Derrick Golden, Jr, Nachiketa Gosukonda, Justin Hill, and Varun Mannam was the overall champion.

But the real winner was the American Heart Association. Through ticket sales, 50/50’s, donations, and concessions, the event raised over $3,500 for the American Heart Association.

Hoops for Heart chairpersons Joey Dunn’20, Jaleena Findley ’20, Abby Chadwick ’21, and Nihaal Walia ’21 planned the event along with members of the CSAC Hoops 4 Heart committee and Campus Ministry Department consisting of Sister Cynthia Marie Babyak, Mr. John Roche, Mr. Kevin McCarthy, and Father Keith Cervine. They all collaborated diligently to make this Charity Basketball game a great success.

Half-time proved to be just as exciting as the game with a total of 55 people paying to take the half-court shot challenge. What was so amazing was that three of those taking the challenge made the half-court shot.  The winners of the half-court shot challenge were Adam Kubisiak, ‘21 and Cyprain Mgbako, ’19 and John Campagna ’20.

Thank you to the faculty, alumni, parents, and STA students who played and worked the event as well as to all who came out and supported this great cause.
