In a fusion of history, inspiration, and a touch of humor, the African American Heritage Club and History Department of St. Thomas Aquinas High School hosted a thought-provoking event for students, "A Conversation with Justin Dews." Mr. Dews is a then-Bishop Ahr High School Class of 2007 alumnus and he furthered his education as a graduate of Harvard University in 2011 and Harvard Law School in 2015, where he was a member of the Harvard Law Review. The event provided a unique opportunity for students to engage with one of STA’s noteworthy alumni, who shared insights into his educational odyssey and successful legal career.

The conversation was facilitated by Mr. Paul Nolan, History Department Chairperson. The dialogue began with Justin reflecting on how his time at STA/BGA laid the foundation for his future endeavors. He explained how his AP History teacher, Ms. Luzhak, included government and politics in her lesson plans, which piqued his interest. While looking back on his life, he also mentioned how impactful Ms. Acab’s Careers & College Education class was because he had the opportunity to shadow a professional judge for a day. The experience made the legal profession something real and something that he desired to pursue.

Mr. Dews discussed the highlights of his illustrious career, which has included Health Care and Education researcher on President Barack Obama’s re-election campaign, legal intern for the House Energy & Commerce Committee, clerk for Judge Joseph Greenaway on the Third Circuit U.S. Court of Appeals, legislative advisor for Governor Murphy, and Deputy Associate Counsel for the White House. He unfolded his career and explained the work that he'd done in the White House, of which he was particularly proud, in which he found himself an integral part of the confirmation of Justice Ketanji Brown Jackson to the Supreme Court.

During the question-and-answer session, students asked questions of and sought advice from Mr. Dews on career choices, influential people in his life, and future goals. He encouraged them to "learn and grow from those around you" and emphasized the potential impact of every individual on future outcomes. He addressed topics such as the butterfly effect, the normalcy of indecision, and the importance for students to seek something that genuinely interests themselves.

In concluding the event, Mr. Dews offered valuable advice to the students in attendance, urging them to appreciate their school environment as a time dedicated solely to learning and self-improvement: “Your only job right now is to learn and improve, so absorb as much as you can and use the resources your school has.” The event left a lasting impression on students, fostering a sense of inspiration and encouraging them to explore their passions.
